Fried Green Tomato Recipes

Introduction to Fried Green Tomato Recipes:

There was a time if you offered someone fried green tomatoes they would think it was the punch line to a joke, but there are plenty of southerners out there who know better and if you haven't given them a try yet, you just might be surprised at how good they really are. There are a lot of ways you can prepare green tomatoes for frying.

Some folks will use flour or cornmeal, others will use crackers or bread crumbs. Some choose to dip them in a beaten egg prior to coating them, while others will just dredge them and go right to the fryer with a little salt and pepper and even bacon grease where available. These recipes work out best when used with fresh home grown tomatoes just before they start to ripen. If you grow extra tomatoes in a season, be sure to freeze them whole so you can use them later on for fried green tomato recipes such as these.

Fried Green Tomato Recipes #1:

This fried green tomato recipe works great with red or green tomatoes, but you must make sure they are firm. If the tomatoes are too soft they will turn out mushy. This makes for a great appetizer or a late night light meal. You will need the following:

4 large tomatoes - green

2 eggs

1 cup flour

1/2 cup milk

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/2 cup cornmeal

1/4 tsp pepper

2 tsp salt

Oil for frying

Wash and clean your tomatoes first, then slice them approximately one half inch thick and throw away the ends. Put the eggs and milk in a bowl together and whisk them until they are thoroughly mixed. On one plate, spread out your flour. On another plate, mix the cornmeal, salt, pepper, and bread crumbs. Start off by dipping the tomato slices in the flour until lightly coated, then dip them into the mixture of eggs and milk. Finally, thoroughly coat them in the cornmeal and bread crumb mixture.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat, with approximately one half inch of oil, the same thickness as the tomato slices. Once the oil is fully heated, place the tomato slices in, being careful not to cook them too close together. When browned on one side, flip and lightly brown on the other. Drain excess oil and serve!

Fried Green Tomato Recipes #2:

This next fried green tomato recipe is a southern style recipe. You will need the following ingredients:

3 sliced green tomatoes

4 tbsp milk

1 large egg

1 cup flour

1 cup cornmeal

Virgin olive oil

Combine the milk and egg into a small bowl and mix together thoroughly with a whisk. In a separate bowl mix together the flour and cornmeal. Heat enough olive oil in a large skillet on medium heat to a depth of about 1/4 inch. First, dredge the slices of tomatoes through the egg mixture, then coat them in the cornmeal and flour mixture. Place the slices into the oil and brown on both sides, then serve.

Fried Green Tomato Recipes #3:

This next fried green tomato recipe adds a little kick to a traditional southern favorite. This recipe makes for a really great party appetizer. You will need the following ingredients to get started:

3 large green tomatoes - firm

1/2 cup buttermilk or regular milk

1 cup flour

1 tbsp seasoning - cajun

1 large egg

1/2 cup bread crumbs

1/3 cup corn meal

1/4 cup oil - peanut or vegetable

Start off by washing your tomatoes and then slicing them into roughly one half inch slices. Lightly salt each of the slices and set aside for five minutes. Get 3 shallow bowls and combine the following ingredients. In the first bowl mix the Cajun seasoning and flour. In the second bowl whisk the egg and buttermilk (or milk), and in the third bowl mix the cornmeal and bread crumbs.

Over medium heat, heat the oil in a large skillet. First coat both sides of the tomato in the flour and seasoning, then dip them into the egg mixture, and finally coat them again with the final mix of bread crumbs and cornmeal. Immediately place the coated slices into the skillet with the hot oil and cook one side at a time for roughly 3 to 5 minutes, or until lightly browned, then flip and repeat on the other side until browned. Once cooked, move the slices to a plate covered with paper towels so they can drain off the excess oil. Serve a few minutes later.

Fried Green Tomato Recipes #4:

This last fried green tomato recipe has a bit more seasoning than most recipes, but I think it adds a certain flavor that most recipes just don't seem to reach. You will need the following ingredients:

4 large green tomatoes

1 cup flour

1 cup ground cornmeal

1 1/2 cups buttermilk

1 tbsp garlic powder

A pinch of cayenne pepper

Salt and black pepper

1 tbsp butter

1/2 cup vegetable oil

Start off by combining the garlic powder, flour, cornmeal, and cayenne pepper together in a large bowl. In another bowl mix the buttermilk with the salt and pepper. Take your 4 tomatoes and cut off the ends, then slice them into one half inch slices. Dip each slice into the buttermilk and then dip them into the flour and cornmeal mixture until they are completely coated.

Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat and coat the entire bottom of the pan with the oil. Once the oil is nice and hot, fry the slices on each side for several minutes until they are browned on both sides. Move them to paper towels to drain and then serve them with lemon wedges and hot sauce for some added kick!
